What is an RFID Card?

RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification. It’s a wireless technology that identifies and authenticates a user by reading a small chip inside a card, fob, or sticker.
In EV charging, most hardware uses the 13.56 MHz standard, widely adopted for access control and payments.

When linked to your driver account, your RFID card allows secure and seamless access to charging stations, without needing your phone or scanning a code.

Why Use an RFID Card for Charging?

RFID is a preferred method for starting a charging session because it is:

  • Fast and convenient – Just tap your card on the charger’s RFID reader to begin.

  • Accurate and secure – Each RFID is linked to your driver account, ensuring correct billing and access.

  • Independent from mobile connectivity – certified chargers store a local list of registered RFIDs. Even if the charger’s internet connection is temporarily lost, you can still start charging with your RFID.

  • Easy to track – All sessions started with your RFID appear in your transaction history.

How to Start Charging with an RFID Card

  1. Locate the charger’s RFID reader – Usually positioned near the display or connector holster.

  2. Tap your RFID card or fob against the reader for 1–2 seconds.

  3. Wait for the charger’s confirmation signal (beep, light change, or on-screen message).

  4. Plug in your vehicle if prompted, or follow any on-screen instructions.

Once charging starts, you can monitor the session via the charger display or in the EV charging app (if supported for that charger).

When RFID Works Best

  • At private chargers linked to your account.

  • At shared or public chargers in your operator network.

  • When you want a hands-free alternative to using the app or scanning QR codes.

  • When mobile coverage is poor or unavailable.

FAQs

  • Do I need internet access to use my RFID?
No. If the charger supports local RFID authorization, you can start a session even without an internet connection at the site.

  • What happens if I lose my RFID card?
Contact your operator immediately to deactivate the lost card and prevent unauthorized use. You can then assign a new RFID to your account.

  • How do I link my RFID card to my account?
This is usually done by your operator or account admin in the back office, or the driver can add it themselves via the EV charging app.
